MILLE MIGLIA 2005
50 years ago, the Mille Milgia was a race on closed public roads of deadly earnest. Racing legends in Ferraris and Mercedes, mostly notably the 722 Mercedes 300SLR driven by Sterling Moss and navigated by Denis Jenkinson, duelled over the 1000 km route from Brescia to Rome and back. The 1955 race was won by Sterling and Jenkinson in a record beating time of 10 hours, and 7 minutes. It was the crash two years later of the Marquis de Portago'ds Ferrari, killing spectators, that sealed the fate of this most spectacular but dangerous of car races.
Today, the Mille Milgia is run as a tribute 'event'. with cars of al ages following the course of the great race, and a key event in the classic car calendar.
The 2005 event took place in May.
