ROME
'When in Rome... do as the Romans do' goes the old English saying. The trouble is, when you visit rome, it doesn't help answer the question, 'where to begin'!
With the opportunity to delve into over 2,000 years of history, much of which is still very much in evidence through its architecture, you need to plan carefully to make the most of your trip. 'Plan B' is to simply throw away the guide and follow you instincts.
The greatest joy of all is to simply immerse yourself in the daily life of this great city. Public transport is good, and this apartment is well located, so getting about is easy if you choose not to rent a car. Certainly make time to visit the Vatican City, the Colesseum (Colosseum), Pantheon, Spanish Steps and at least one museum, but make time for plenty of coffees, gelato (sumptious Itallian ice cream) and exploring the lively piazza such as Campo de'fiori that has a daily flower and vegetable market and has many bars and trattorie.
The Colosseum dates back to 72AD and its remaining structure is still awe inspiring today. Imagine 50,000 seated spectators and games that could last over 100 days where thousands of animals and gladiators fought to the death. St. Peter's Basilica dominates St. Peter's square.
VATICAN CITY
Give yourself plenty of time to explore the Vatican City. If you rush, you will miss works of art and sights that are centuries old. Works by 15th century Botticelli and other famous painters from Tuscany and Umbria can be seen, together with Michelangelo's ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
One last thing before you finally head for home... throw a coin over your shoulder into the famous Trevi Fountain, built in 19 BC by General Augustus and still bringing water into the city today - and you will be certain to return one day.
