I have moved to Tuscany to paint, and what a great inspiration this is for me and which I should like to share with others. I have taken up residence in this wonderful converted Tuscan farmhouse.
I have decided to run family holidays; groups or individuals also most welcome with either full board and lodging or just bed and breakfast. We intend for you to enjoy yourself fully. It is your holiday. As well as family or individual holidays, I do Art courses from the beginner amateur to the more accomplished. Mainly painting and drawing but three dimensional work is also taught by a professional friend of mine; though communication is difficult. Indian American/Spanish/Italian.
Poggiarello is a large farmhouse, recently restored, situated on the private estate of San Fabian (1500 acres), twenty minutes south from the centre of Siena. It lies in the heart of the "Crete Senese", reminiscent of 13th century Sienese paintings: lunar landscapes with single cypress or pine trees that act as boundary markers and a few sparse elm and oak woods. The house is spacious and has six double bedrooms, three bathrooms, living room, large dining room/kitchen. There is a large garden with swimming pool.
I was educated at Milton Abbey School, Blandford Forum and then at the Ruskin School of Drawing, University of Oxford under tutelage of John Nash, a classical painter in the style of Poussin and John Newberry who is a painter of wide fame.
I have written thesis on Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, a Spanish impressionist painter and on the architectural fantasies of Piranesi; together with articles on Tauromaquia - I am currently writing a book called " A passage in time", but primarily I paint.
I was Director of Art at Portora school in Dorset. A career lasting many years teaching 'A' level Art and History of Art. I have also taught adult life classes for many years and delight in, I hope, passing on my enthusiasm with some expertise I hope.
I have exhibited regularly in the Midlands and the West Country. Now in Italy and am soon returning to London to put on another exhibition. I will post details on this site of my exhibitions when they are known.
I operate out of a lovely old, recently renovated, farmhouse of friends of mine in the heart of Tuscany and on the private estate of Count Giuseppe Fiorentini and his family. The estate is only 20 minutes from Siena and an hour from Florence, with many beautiful and historically important hill top towns all within easy reach. Murlo, Buonconvento, Montalcina and Pienza to name a few.
The programme for the week is designed to give full opportunity to visit some of these places and I can recommend unique History of Art modules in preparation for 'O' and 'A' levels.
And in expensive luxury which can only enlighten the true discovery of culture. An experience that will stay with the student forever when he or she sees the magnificence of of Brunelleschi's architecture, the sheer impact of Michelangelo and Baccio Bandelli's sculptures and the enticement of the paintings by Fra Angelico or surprise of the Boboli Gardens. Or one could settle for the more modernistic approach of Di Cerrico.
We try and keep the costs down and therefore recommend a minimum of 7 students and one teacher at a total cost of £520.00 per person for the week which includes teaching, accommodation, food, cooking, cleaning, utilities, transport, driver and excursions during the week. Airfares are not included. In our experience, we believe the Easter holiday period is ideal for revision and we are fully committed to ensuring a relaxed thorough very workmanship like week. Other times of the year are available with prior warning so as not to conflict with other bookings for the house.
I sincerely hope that this will be of interest to individuals, groups, schools, art departments and students in particular. It is a very special place. Click here for accommodation and to enquire for booking details
